He Knows My Name

Psalm 139:1

O LORD, you have searched me and known me!

King David wrote this marvelous Psalm to express his awe at how much our loving Father knows us inside and out. He is not a god who is out there, far away and preoccupied or stressed over the weighty things of the universe. He is the one who dwells in me and explores the deep recesses of my soul. There is no one who understands me like He does.

David reminds me that the Lord knows all that I am doing today, even when I sit down and when I get up. Heading to the store? He’s right there with me. He listens to the words that I am about to say even before I form them because He knows what I am thinking. He knows my needs and the choices I will make.

David then says that there is no place I can go where He is not holding my hand and leading me. If I end up in darkness, its not dark to Him and therefore I should not fear what may happen.

But all this did not start when I decided to trust in Jesus. The Lord saw me before I was born, before I was a gleam in my mother’s eye. When I was in her womb, He was there, determining which family I would be born in, then shaping me to be the person He wanted to see come alive and live life to the full.

Yes, He even gave me a unique fingerprint so that I would be different than anyone else on earth. He wrote my name down in His book before I emerged and recorded His precious thoughts about me because He saw me as special, someone who would know Him as my Father and was made for a purpose.

He also knew that I would face struggles, battles in my life against forces that would try to tear me down. He was with me while those who hate Him were after me trying to lead me astray or make me suffer.

Why doesn’t He just destroy them?

Our heavenly Father causes the sun to shine on them and the rain to water their crops whether they love Him or not because He extends the same offer of mercy to them as He did to me.

When I am hurt, He captures my tears in a bottle, the Bible says, because He grieves with me. His love for me makes me want to repent of any sin I would harbor, even in my thoughts, so I am asking Him to search my heart.

I want Him to remove anything that would prevent me from experiencing the eternal blessings He has for me.
