The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.
In the late 1700’s, as revolution brought down the French government, the philosopher Voltaire became very popular as a historian, free thinker, and influential writer. He vehemently opposed Christianity and wrote many rather scoffing works expressing his disdain for the Bible. His railings were filled with poisonous venom, calling the Christian faith the “infamous superstition.”
He was quoted as saying, “One hundred years from my day, there will not be a Bible on earth except one that is looked upon by an antiquarian curiosity-seeker.” He also said, “we are living in the twilight of Christianity.”
He died in 1778 and 58 years after his death, ironically his house became a storage facility for Bibles and Gospel tracts and a printing press he once used was producing millions of Bibles in a variety of languages.
The prophet Isaiah reminds us in today’s verse that the God we serve is greater than man can imagine and not to be taken lightly.
Why do we stumble in our faith and doubt that He will come through for us?
He has measured the span of the heavens by the width of His hand and knows the weight of all the mountains. He did not need advice on how to put the stars in place and determine the standard for what is right and wrong.
To Him, the nations of men are like spit in a bucket or dust on a scale. They are regarded as less than nothing before Him. The inhabitants of earth are like grasshoppers and He raises up one ruler and takes down another. He merely blows on them and they wither.
He calls each of the stars by name and knows if any are missing. He never becomes tired and His understanding is beyond our ability to comprehend it.
He is the Everlasting God, the Lord, and with all His might, He cares about you and I. He strengthens you if you are weary and to those who love Him, He gives power to handle life.
When you learn to patiently wait for Him as He answers your prayer, He will give you even more strength. You’ll soar like an eagle and will be able to keep running and not get weary.
Voltaire may have scoffed at our God, but His promises to us will stand forever.
